“The Departure: Chrissy Crowley releases new CD

Chrissy Crowley (centre) is joined on stage last Saturday at The Doryman by friends (from left) Jason Roach, Adam MacIntyre, Kenneth MacKenzie and Pat Gillis.

“We’re just doing some last minute preparation for our trip to the Chicago Celtic Festival later this week,” said Crowley.

Crowley is excited about the trip and her new CD which has been in the works for some time now due to her study schedule over the past year. She just returned from a tour of Cuba where she was featured in CeltFest Cuba from April 3rd-12th.

“There’s quite an influence down there from the Spanish Celtic culture which is pretty interesting. We played and taught some fiddle and step-dancing workshops. Andrea Beaton was there as well, and we heard a lot music from the Cuban and Irish musicians,” said Crowley.

Last Saturday afternoon she had a CD release in Cheticamp for The Departure and another one on Sunday in New Waterford. Being busy is what the twenty-year-old Margaree fiddler wants for the summer. She was joined on stage by several guests in Cheticamp including pianist Jason Roach, guitarists Patrick Gillis and Chris Babineau, pianist Maybelle Chisholm McQueen, piper Kenneth MacKenzie, drummer Adam MacIntyre and fellow Margaree fiddler Douglas Cameron.

Crowley says she’s trying now to book as many gigs as she can this summer in order to promote her music and her new recording. Despite her youth she’s used to traveling the world to spread her music. This week Crowley will be joined in Chicago by Patrick Gillis on guitar and Kenneth MacKenzie on pipes. Colin Grant is another Cape Breton artist who will be making the journey to Chicago.>

When Crowley began recording this CD at Lakewind in Sydney she thought she’d be doing a more traditional recording, but things went a bit in another direction at times with some contemporary and Latin influences.

“I just decided to run with it after all because of my age,” she says. The album is already getting a good reception in many quarters. I was very excited this week to get a call from Warner Music Canada. They want to release two of the tracks on a compilation CD,” said Crowley.

Even though Crowley, pianist Jason Roach, multi-instrumentalist Ian Hayes and Pepito Pinto on Jamaican pans took an exploratory approach, there’s still plenty of traditional playing and influence on the recording along with some of Crowley’s own compositions Crowley draws on her Crowley and Chisholm family musical influences as well on several of the cuts. The recording should be a popular choice for those who enjoy dancing as well. This CD should ensure that Crowley is known far and wide for her music.”
